This land grant is from the controversial Pine Barrens Speculation, in which Georgia governor Edward Telfair made gifts of land grants exceeding many times over the actual amount of land available. Additionally, the land was advertised as fertile, when in fact it consisted of pine barrens. The grants were limited to one thousand acres, but to bypass this law, the governors issued multiple grants to the same person.
