19th Century French Bronze Sculpture
Offered is a 19th century Victorian gilt bronze inspired by Pradier’s Sappho. After Moreau with signature; possibly attributable to Pradier's student François-Clement Moreau. There were several Moreaus working in the genre however so I cannot be sure about which made this one. Reclined in classical saber leg chair and holding a wilted lily blossom, this classical beauty’s most striking attribute is found in the details of her elaborate draped gown.
In the same vein as Sappho and Geoffrin clock topper bronzes, this piece is unique and after extensive research I cannot find another example.
It is likely this was originally a clock topper. Beautiful gilding remains with pleasantly graduated wear patterns. Heavier wear around hands and various spots.
9 1/2 by 12 by 5 inches.
Very good overall condition.
