Carved Oak Oval Table, Lion Mask Pedestal, France, 19th Century

A French Henri II carved oak oval centre or dining table, the surface bleached to a pale, dry finish. The oval top has a carved leaf-tip edge over a deep plain apron.
The top sits on a heavy turned pedestal carved with a band of interlaced guilloche enclosing rosettes, above a block carved with square flower-head panels. Four scrolled legs spring from the block, each carved with a lion mask with open mouth and flowing mane, acanthus and beading, and ending in a large paw foot.
The table has been raised to suit modern seat heights, and now stands 30 inches high.

ConditionThe oak has been stripped and bleached, with darker color remaining in the carved recesses. The top is made in two halves, now fixed permanently together; the centre seam is visible, with a slight gap at the edge, and there are no leaves. The apron has veneer repairs beside the seam on one side and a small chip to the lower moulding beside the seam on the other. Board joint lines show in the top, along with a row of round wood plugs around the perimeter. A fine vertical line runs through the pedestal column and the carved block. Later timber has been added beneath the top. The feet stand on later oak blocks. A small dark spot shows in the apron on one side.
